History: Ancient Greece 776BC used wreaths of Lauren for crowning victors. Used to wear wreaths around head and neck. In colleges around the US and in Europe, they keep the tradition and use them in graduation ceremony. A symbol of a masters degree, and the word Laureate refers to the laurel leaf. It has come to represent perseverance, and is often used in contrast. To “rest on ones laurels” means to rely entirely on long past successes, for continued fame and recognition. To “look to ones laurels” means to be careful of losing rank to competition.”
In the bible, Paul in Timothy 2:5 talks of a “victors crown”, in Peter 5:4 he speaks of a “crown unfading,” (referring to the Laurel leaf fades eventually but being crowned with true spiritual perseverance doesn’t fade)
It is about perseverance, protection and preserving our successes.
